How To Succeed With New Year Resolutions - 2012

Hello all and welcome into the new year 2012. This post is just to call your attention about how you lived last year and how you are preparing to face up the future in this new year. Allow me to start my introduction with this comment:
"Have you ever made a New year's resolution and given up a few weeks or maybe a few hours into the new year? You are not alone. Researchers have discovered that 25 percent of New Year's resolutions are abandoned within the first week; 60 percent are gone within six months. Of those who fail, the majority will make the same resolution year after year for as long as ten years before they either give up or finally succeed in making a change that lasts for a least six months." (Christian Counseling, page 5. Gary R. Collins, Ph.D.; 2007)
Not very encouraging, heun?! You are right unless you do some things about it. Some things differently. Brian Tracy in his book, 'The million dollars habits', reveals that close to 4% of all those who make new year resolution without writing them up succeeds and more than 60% of those writing their new year resolutions do achieve them. What does it mean to us? It means that most of our new year resolution are often presented not as resolution but as simple wishes. Any serious resolutions are like agreements and agreement are not just verbally or imaginatively taken but they are lay down - written down. The difference between the new year resolutions agreement to other businesses or professional agreements, is that the new year resolutions are often/mostly agreement with ourselves.

Isn't it strange that when we make an agreement with ourselves we do them lightly? we do not take it seriously to the point of 'scriptwriting' it. Especially when we consider that we will live with the choices we will make and take! The year 2011 is gone and what we were not able to accomplish is also gone with it. But thank be to God we do have this new year 2012. Please, make the best of it starting by writing down and planning how to reach your expectations.

Here are some stuffs you may want to consider doing this year among many:

1. There is so many languages around you, why not plan to try and learn one new one this year.
2. There is so many knowledge preserved in books, why not start reading books on subjects that you have recently developed interest.
3. Why not starting reading one new book per month or old interesting books that you can't remember details in order to further your knowledge or your expertise?
4. Consider learning one new sport or starting going to the gym this year.
5. What about learning a new dance style or enhancing the level of the one you already know?
6. What about learning a new musical instrument?
7. Or starting reading your whole Bible within a year?

All these are good resolutions but unless it is written down with an action plan, they will just stay mere wishes or mood whims. I can only hope that you will use your intellect and your faith in God to make those dreams and wishes come into realization during this year 2011.

Remember that a year has 52 weeks. Make them count. Do not delay to take a prompt and proactive actions.

Best of luck for the year 2012 in Jesus' name.

The Truth About Prayer

The year is dying on us. In few days, we are jumping into a new year. We have all made plans for the new year night. Partying, drinking, singing, eating, chatting, dancing and probably more. I, for one, will be doing all of these with one more activity on the 31st December night - I'll be giving a keynote speech at the Full Gospel Business Men Fellowship International evening Diner. A very demanding task and a tough assignment. Matter of fact, I forgot one more activity. I will be also praying.

As a Christian, we have the privilege to speak to God and this is usually referred in the Scripture as Praying. Prayer has its enormous benefits as a life changing spiritual practice and also as a real life altering weapon. Christians have written a lot about the theological benefits of prayer, and I have read many of them. I have even mentioned some of them here that left an in-print in my life.

Though the spiritual benefits of prayers have been profusely cataloged and taught, another sphere of prayer benefits has recently emerged away from theology. A group of curious researcher seemed to have been wondering about prayer. These guys wanted to know the truth about prayer. They came out of their investigation with these conclusions:
This video reveals how prayer actually changes four distinct areas of the human brain: the frontal lobe, the anterior cingulate, the parietal lobe, and the limbic system. It also details how a specific amount of prayer time per day can help prevent memory loss, mental decline, and even dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Plus, it covers 47 scientifically proven benefits of prayer, including pain relief, reduced risk of death from heart attack or stroke, lessened anxiety or depression, improved immune function, and more.

This is great news to prayerful folks. I hope you consider making it part of your new year resolution and your life now on. Stop mocking those who pray - join them instead!

Have a Happy New Year in Jesus' name.

Changing Church

Time has really changed. We barely noticed that because we are so in hurry and involved in a busy life. But i still remember the time when Church attendance was more traditional. It was the time when we still carried our Bible under our arms. And this wasn't long ago in the past. This was the late 90's and early 21st Century. Few even feel the need to even go anymore to attend Church physically. Most of us have just recently learned to follow church sermons and services online. Before, we used to spend time at Christian Bookstores and queue to buy books related to our spirituality. Now we have Amazon and all kind of online bookstores. In brief, things have changed significantly.
Here some of their findings relating to mobile technology in the Church:
  • 74% of Church members read an eBible.
  • 21% discourage reading eBibles.
  • 8.2% say the use of technology goes against tradition.
  • 1.4% believe there are theological problems regarding the use of technology.
  • 1.9% of Churches have decided to avoid or limit the use of technology.
And with change comes some measure of fear and possibly a level of instability in our practices. I am certainly for the use of technology and i can not agree with the naysayers. However i understand at an extent their concern about the invasion of technology into our Christian services and events. The question is now, what should be the limit of using those new gadgets. What to say about those 'tweeting' during services or else? These are some of the interesting questions I am curious to hear answers about. In all we are doing, let us be purposeful otherwise we run the risk of abusing our greatest generational blessing. As Vox Day said about the suffering and persecuted Christians around the world:
"We pray that their faith will be rewarded and their suffering will be eased; may they pray that our faith will survive our wealth and comfort."

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2012 in Jesus' name.

How Long Will I Live? A Brief Case for Premature Death

I have never been a big fan of fatality. This is why I hardly accept as a rational statement, when people say: "People dies because it is their day." Today, I'll explain why I do not hold that view. This is long overdue. I had promised some times back that I'll write a post on death to my friends. To be precise, about my belief about premature death.

Let's consider my opening verse:

Psalm 39:4 NIV "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.

Psalm 39:4 KJV "LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am."

Both biblical versions of Psalm 39:4, say essentially this: 1) Life has an end; 2) The day of life have a limit, a measure. They are numbered, counted. 3) The Lord sole knows our life span and it is possible that He can reveal that to us.

In this verse of Psalm 39:4, we are not told that we will always die when our life days have been all used or come to an end. God certainly knows the length of our days, but He also knows that we can die before those days are completely used. This is what we call a premature death. It is when death comes before the full maturity of our days. How do I know that?

For first, God himself who knows the length and the amount of our days, let us know about it:

Proverb 4:10  "Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many."

But why would the Lord inspire the writer of Proverb to embrace the belief that our years of life would be longer and many if we listening to His instructions or sayings? The only reason He could possibly say this, it is because not listening to God can significantly shorten our lives. He gave life, hence He knows our limits and the length it can be lived in full. In our hands, there is no guarantee that we can make it to the fullness of our days.

You see, if you can't foresee the future events, you can't possibly prepare yourself in advance for calamity. More so if you don't have the one who have foresight of the future by your side how could you avoid accident of destiny? One of the easiest way to cut short our life and die prematurely is to engage ourselves into risky behaviors and deadly sins. For example in Psalm 55:23, we read "But You, O God, shall bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in you."

So the key for a longer life is to synchronize our life interest with that of the Creator of life, for Him alone can assure us to have a prolonged and purposeful life. This doesn't mean that if we all live with an attentive hears to God's commands that we will all live to reach the same old age. Remember that this is not the promise. The promise is that our life will reach a full age according to the already set days of our life measure. In Job 5:26, we are informed that 'You shall come to your grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn comes in in his season.' It is about 'full age' and not necessarily 'old age'.

If God purpose for me is to go to Eternal felicity by age 44, this means that is the measure of my life and days - my full age. If I am attentive and cooperative I can live a purposeful life and die at the fullness of my time - meaning age 44. If I am not cooperative, I might get unfortunate and die earlier than that. If your life span (your full age) is 98 years of age, you may still be unfortunate and meet an early death by age 21 or 31 or even 84 if you do not listen attentively to God's prescriptions for your life purpose. You might maybe remember these scriptures from Deuteronomy 30:19 warning us that those who take the wrong turn are responsible for their early death, not their destiny, “If he chooses disobedience (sin), he takes the path leading to death.”

The Bible has always surprises for us. It seems that at time, people can literally escape death, even when they have reached the set limit of their days measure. There is this story of King Hezekiah who received a reliable prophecy by the all time winner of exact prophecy - the prophet Isaiah. Hezekiah was an honorable man, who had listened to God and live an correct life. Hence when the news of his death came from a reliable source - Isaiah prediction - the King prayed and asked God that He wanted to live more. He wanted to live beyond his allocated time. So he bargained with God through prayers. Can I just add this, prayer is most effective when we are living a godly life.

"In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, And said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying, Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years." Isaiah 38:1-5

Interesting story. Hezekiah has cheated death because of his righteous life. Actually, a righteous living in principle do grant you the ability to reach your full appointed age on earth. However Hezekiah has showed the abundant potential of having a good life with God. You can make yourself be heard in prayers for things that was not even in store for you. As long as you have a promise and that you have the requirement, you can apply for it. That is why I don't really worry about spiritual techniques and principles preachings that are in vogue too much. I believe that If you live in harmony with God, you might just discover why St. Paul believed that 'godliness has a greater benefit than anything'. Deuteronomy 4:40, "You shall keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days upon the earth, which the LORD your God give you, for ever."

So as much as it has been proven that a healthy life through exercise give you a fighting chance for a longer life, i would like to submit to you that a godly life can do as much and even more, 1Timothy 4:8 "For bodily exercise profits little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

So back to my title question, 'How long will I live?' I don't know. But I know at least two things. Bodily exercise can add to a longer life but not as much as a godly life. Your life length is related to your submission and listening to God's commands, just like the Bible teaches us in many places: Ephesians 6:1-3  "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth."

This is the first commandment with a promise but it is certainly not the only one with a promise of a longer life as already seen above.

Have a Merry Christmas Day and a Happy New Year 2012 in Jesus' name.

The Meaning and 0rigin of CHRISTMAS!

Update: - Don't forget to check my book. -

Two thousand years ago, the founder of Christianity was born. He was called Jesus and he became known as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus-Christ. The events surrounding His birth is told only twice in Bible. First in the Gospel of Mathew 1-2 and the second one, in the Gospel of Luke 1-2. However the exact day of his birth wasn't recorded, leaving hence, a room for speculation about the time of his birth. Each December 25th, millions and Billions of people celebrate the birth of the savior God has sent to humanity. That day is remembered as Christmas. However, in certain circle, some folks just get angry and obnoxious about this day. In one of the many case against Christmas I have heard and read, the religious authors shew their disdain about Dec. 25 because they see in it a pagan feast. However it is usually forgotten that a non pagan origin for Christmas is equally an historical facts.

Greg Peters, an assistant professor at Biola University, an expert in early church history, Peters told ... that there are at least two theories about the way that Dec. 25 was decided on as the observation date of Christ’s birth. “One is that Dec. 25 was this pagan feast. There is also a theory that Dec. 25 was picked based on some early Christian sources that say that Jesus’ death would have been on March 25, based on the year and when the Passover happened.” Peters explains that according to ancient rabbinic practice, one’s death date was one’s birth date. In case of Jesus, it was March 25. Also in rabbinic tradition, birth is the same as conception. Therefore, if Jesus was “conceived” on March 25th, you add nine months and get Dec. 25. “Some scholars believe this and say you don’t have to see Christmas just as a Pagan feast day,” says Peters.
“It’s also possible to read early Christian authors and see that early Christians appropriated pagan holidays for themselves. The fact that Dec. 25 was a pagan holiday and they could usurp a pagan holiday- I’m sure it wasn’t far from their minds either.”
What is Professor Greg Peter saying? He said essentially two things. 1) people can argue for either a pagan origin to Christmas or argue for a theological/phylosophical origin for Christmas. 2) he also said that in the case it would fall under a pagan origin, we shouldn't look insulted because Christians seemed to have appropriate pagan holidays for themselves and hence redefining the meaning of those events while stripping pagans of their celebration because they became Christianized. Lets start with the first one.

0rigin of Christmas: Christian source

From Wikipedia, I read this info which lend support to what professor Greg Peter said:
For centuries, Christian writers accepted that Christmas was the actual date on which Jesus was born. John Chrysostom preached a sermon in Antioch c. 386 which established the date of Christmas as December 25 on the Julian calendar since the conception of Jesus (Luke 1:26) had been announced during the sixth month of Elisabeth's pregnancy with John the Baptist (Luke 1:10-13) as dated from the duties Zacharias performed on the Day of Atonement during the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar Ethanim or Tishri (Lev. 16:29, 1 Kings 8:2) which falls in September–October.

The argument above is rather simple. If you remember in the Lukan account (Luke 1:26,27,31-KJV), it is said that "And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary ... And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." When the bible says 'and in the sixth month' it is clear that it means that something else has preceded those sixth month. The what preceded it are found in earlier verses in the same chapter 1 of Luke. The verse 24 give us the meaning: 'And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months,'. What does it mean 'after those days'? Earlier verses tells us what those days were. It was the days that preceded Elisabeth conception. Before her miracle few days earlier, her husband - a priest named Zacharias- was visited by the angel that visited Mary at the Annunciation day 6 months later. Those days were days when priest went to the temple as offered burned incense 'according to the custom of the priest's office,' (Verse 9). Those days when priests did those offering were known as the month of TISHREI - the seven month on the Jewish calender (Leviticus 16:29 and 1 King 8:2). The seven month in the Jewish calender was the beginning of the period of autumn which means during September or 0ctober in our modern non-Jewish calender.

Now this is very interesting because it puts the start of Elisabeth pregnancy either in September or 0ctober. Elisabeth was Mary cousin (verse 36) and she was without a child up until her old days. After an angel visited her husband, she conceived and probably for some cultural reasons she hid herself for 5 months before she broke the news to people. 'And in the sixth month' the same angel came back to Israel but this time not to Elisabeth family but to Mary. The second coming of the angel is now known as the Annunciation. So if you add 6 months to 'those days' when Elizabeth pregnancy begun (September-0ctober) you'll end up in either March or April in our modern calender. Which might make Marry to have started her pregnancy of Jesus upon the Angel annunciation of the coming of the King in either March or April.

This lead to the inevitable conclusion that Jesus' birth nine months later - assuming that the Virgin Mary had a normal pregnancy of 9 months - will fall between December or January. December if Jesus' conception was in March. And January if Jesus' conception was in April. Hence the logic of early Christians such as St. Chrysostome to speak of Jesus' birth in December as early as the 4th Century. By the way, Easter Christianity such as 'Ethiopia, Russia and Ukraine celebrate Christmas, both as a Christian feast and as a public holiday, in January'.

0rigin of Christmas: Pagan source

If some see clearly a christian and biblical reason to approximate Jesus Christ birth around December through calculatuions based on Zacharias' temple services, their enthusiasms are not shared by all. As one source puts it: "In the early 18th century, scholars began proposing alternative explanations."
Isaac Newton wargued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice, which the Romans called bruma and celebrated on December 25. In 1743, German Protestant Paul Ernst Jablonski argued Christmas was placed on December 25 to correspond with the Roman solar holiday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti and was therefore a "paganization" that debased the true church.
I have few things to say about this. First, What the detractors usually forgets is that the law of logic, as would say Dr. Ravi Zacharias, demands of us not to assume that because two entities have two things or many things in common means that that they are the same entities. That would make a mistake in logic. If my neighbor John has ears and my dog BUBA has ears, does it follow that John is a dog? 0fcourse not. Having two things in common doesn't make them the same thing.

Second, Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means "the birthday of the unconquered sun". Which certainly might have appeared attractive to Christians who had a strong bend in Evangelism as these ancient testimonials suggests: "O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born...Christ should be born", Cyprian wrote. John Chrysostom also commented on the connection: "They call it the 'Birthday of the Unconquered'. Who indeed is so unconquered as Our Lord . . .?" Their reaction looks to me normal. They saw through the coincidence an opportunity to present Christ as the reality in contrast to Pagan myths and legends. St. Paul the apostle acted similarly when he visited Athens in ancient Greece, "while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. ... Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you." (Acts 17: 16, 22, 23).

What Paul did at the Areopagus debate meeting in Athens was just brilliant, just like Cyprian and Chrysostom few centuries after him. St. Paul saw intense idolatry and he used one of those altar used in the Athenians idolatry to attract their attentions to the only true God and away from their superstition and false gods. Did Paul compromised with paganism? 0fcourse not. St. Paul saw a fortunate providence in the Athenians idolatry to combat their false belief by substituting them with that which was true. This is not compromising with paganism. This is strategic evangelism. The kind that I like. As for me, I don't really think it matters if the calculations are correct nor that the celebration bare some resemblance of day with pagan celebration. I rather share this view:
"While they were aware that pagans called this day the 'birthday' of Sol Invictus, this did not concern them and it did not play any role in their choice of date for Christmas," according to modern scholar S.E. Hijmans. Today, whether or not the birth date of Jesus is on December 25 is not considered to be an important issue among mainstream Christian denominations; rather, celebrating the coming of God into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity is considered to be the primary meaning of Christmas.

Conclusion

It is been some time since i had this document written by an expert in the Jesus studies - NT Wright. It was originally published in Gospel in Paul: Studies on Corinthians, Galatians and Romans for Richard N. Longenecker, eds. L. Ann Jervis and Peter Richardson, 1994, pp. 222–239. Journal for the Study of the New Testament, Supplement Series 108. Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press. Reproduced by permission of the author. Simply put the paper was entitled: GOSPEL AND THEOLOGY IN GALATIANS.

In the paper, the author addressed the fact that even the word 'Gospel' - εὐαγγέλιον in Greek Evangelion- has two sources: “The two backgrounds regularly proposed for Paul’s use of Gospel – Evangelion- are, predictably, the Hebrew scriptures on the one hand and pagan usage on the other. The line between the two tends to follow the old divide between those who suppose Paul to be basically a Jewish thinker and those who see him as having borrowed his fundamental ideas from Hellenism."

So let's assume that even the word 'Gospel', evangelion - εὐαγγέλιον had a pagan source or origin. Does it mean that we should stop using it and assume that Christianity has been compromised from the start? I think not. Words have meaning and it is in the hand of the speaker to infuse them with meaning or even to redefine them:In the Greek world the word Gospel, ‘evangelion’, is a technical term for “news of victory”. More specifically, it refers to the announcement of the birth or accession of an emperor. Not least at the time of Augustus, who became the first Roman emperor following a long period of civil war, the coming of a new ruler meant the promise of peace, a new start for the world. The birthday of the god [Augustus] was the beginning for the world of the glad tidings (εὐαγγέλιον) that have come to men through him. . .

I still remember a time when as a kid i used to sing song where the word 'gay' was used in songs because at that time it simply meant 'happy'. Today, our lexicon has changed. We no longer use the word 'gay' with the same ease as before because the term, the word has changed its meaning. Now to be 'gay' doesn't mean to be 'happy', it rather means to have a 'homosexual affinity'. You change the word, you change the world - said Dr. Ravi Zacharias. As you look closely at the meaning of the word 'Gospel' either from the Hebrew Bible prophecy of Isaiah 40 or the pagan source as quoted above - we should be intellectually alerted and spiritually astute in order to recognize an opportunity to use the cultural language for the sake of our cause. For our cause is Christ. Always, Christ and His Kingdom.

NT Wright said that, ‘The trouble with history-of-religions study is that it regularly fails to see that what matters is not so much where an idea has come from as where it is going to. To announce that YHWH is king is to announce that Caesar is not. The death of one king means the accession of another; the acclamation of a would-be king spells a dire threat for the present one.'

In the same length, the proclamation of Jesus as being the true "Unconquered Sun" is to say that all other pretender to that divine position are 'not Unconquered'. This was the genius of the first Christians and they have won. Jesus is celebrated every year and all other pagan divinity who once shared that day have now faded in oblivion. But Jesus is now and forever more remembered as the TRUTH that all those superstitions only tried to point toward.

Dethroning principalities and powers was the purpose. Here is how N.T Wright puts it:
"The Isaianic hope (Is40) was always conceived as a challenge to paganism at every level; … in declaring that Israel’s hope is fulfilled in her Messiah, ipso facto declares also that the pagan world is confronted with a new ruler." "[The] ‘gospel’ itself decisively confronted and overthrew the pagan powers that had dominated (Gal2.1-5)” "I believe in the essentially apocalyptic nature of Paul’s covenantal theology, and vice versa [when] rightly understood, [it] is not about the destruction of everything that happened before Jesus and the ushering in of a totally new world. It is about the new creation breaking into the old.’

The dethroning of paganism have happened by adapting their symbols like: statutes (Samson the biblical  strong man instead of Hercules the strong mythical demi-god), terminologies (Gospel found in Jesus and not in Augustus) and days of celebration (historic birth of Jesus instead of mythical birth of legendary gods). It was and it is still about the reality vs the fictitious, the unreal, the superstitious or the false. St. Paul in the Bible says this:
For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. (1 Corinthians 9: 19-23 - The Bible)
As we remember the birth and the meaning of his advent, coming to earth- let us rejoice as the angels did when the Son was given, when the Child was born.

The Origin of the Myth

Yesterday i had quite a good evening. Having finished writing my book i decided to take an evening off. I watched two old movies that i have come to love and never grew tired to watch. I started with the exciting movie: "V for Vendetta". I still believe that there will never be anymore movie like it, just like there will never be any other movie like "The Matrix 1". After that i watched the fabulous and most amazing movie turned in medieval time i have ever seen "The Gladiator". Still awe-inspiring, despite having watched it regularly for a decade now. Some work of arts deserves to be eternally praised! This reminds me this sentence made by Maximus in the Gladiator: "what we do in life echoes in eternity".

Since i finished my evening in a late antiquity positive note, i felt the urge of reading some middle age documents. For a time now, i have been reading an atheist blog writer who happens to be an amateur historian. Contrary to most atheists that i have come to consider shallow thinkers, this one is quite something else. I even quoted him somewhere in my book. Despite being an atheist, he somehow find a way in being objective in his analysis. So i opened again his blog and retrieved some of his 2009 writings, and i just loved what i read. He made an interesting case about a subject i have already spoken about here in the past and even debated in a different forum. It is about the Myth that the Dark Age was caused by the Christian Church (read - the Catholic Church).

I have used snippets of his writings below, if you want to read the whole thing during this weekend feel free to check the link at the end of these quotes:

"... the myth that the Catholic Church caused the Dark Ages and the Medieval Period was a scientific wasteland is regularly wheeled, creaking, into the sunlight for another trundle around the arena. The myth goes that the Greeks and Romans were wise and rational types who loved science and were on the brink of
doing all kinds of marvellous things (inventing full-scale steam engines is one example that is usually, rather fancifully, invoked) until Christianity came along, banned all learning and rational thought and ushered in the Dark Ages. Then an iron-fisted theocracy, backed by a Gestapo-style Inquisition, prevented any science or questioning inquiry from happening until Leonardo da Vinci invented intelligence and the wondrous Renaissance saved us all from Medieval darkness."

"I love to totally stump them by asking them to present me with the name of one - just one - scientist burned, persecuted or oppressed for their science in the Middle Ages. They always fail to come up with any. They usually try to crowbar Galileo back into the Middle Ages, which is amusing considering he was a contemporary of Descartes. When asked why they have failed to produce any such scientists given the Church was apparently so busily oppressing them, they often resort to claiming that the Evil Old Church did such a good job of oppression that everyone was too scared to practice science. By the time I produce a laundry list of Medieval scientists - like Albertus Magnus, Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon, John Peckham, Duns Scotus, Thomas Bradwardine, Walter Burley, William Heytesbury, Richard Swineshead, John Dumbleton, Richard of Wallingford, Nicholas Oresme, Jean Buridan and Nicholas of Cusa - and ask why these men were happily pursuing science in the Middle Ages without molestation from the Church, my opponents have usually run away to hide and scratch their heads in puzzlement at what just went wrong."

"Far from being a stagnant dark age, as the first half of the Medieval Period (500-1000 AD) certainly was, the period from 1000 to 1500 AD actually saw the most impressive flowering of scientific inquiry and discovery since the time of the ancient Greeks, by far eclipsing the Roman and Hellenic Eras in every respect. With Occam and Duns Scotus taking the critical approach to Aristotle further than Aquinas' more cautious approach, the way was open for the Medieval scientists of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries to question, examine and test the perspectives the translators of the Twelfth Century had given them"

"These men were not only the first to truly apply mathematics to physics but also developed logarithmic functions 300 years before John Napier and the Mean Speed Theorem 200 years before Galileo. The fact that Napier and Galileo are credited with discovering things that Medieval scholars had already developed is yet another indication of how "the Myth" has warped our perceptions of the history of science ... Buridan was one of the first to compare the movements of the cosmos to those of another Medieval innovation - the clock. The image of a clockwork universe which was to serve scientists well into our own era began in the Middle Ages... These men are hardly the products of a "dark age" and their careers are conspicuously free of any of the Inquistitors and threats of burnings so fondly and luridly imagined by the fevered proponents of 'the Myth'."

"In the academic sphere at least the "Conflict Thesis" of a historical war between science and theology has been long since overturned. It is very odd that so many of my fellow atheists are clinging so desperately to a long-dead position that was only ever upheld by amateur Nineteenth Century polemicists and not the careful research of recent objective peer reviewed historians. This is strange behaviour for people who like to label themselves "rationalists". I'll leave others to ponder how "rational" it is."
